Cayo is the largest of the six districts in Belize and is situated on the west side of the country, residing at the foothills of the Maya Mountains. It contains Belmopan, the capital city of Belize, and also, the twin-towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, which are at the centre of the inland tourist business in Belize.

Cayo has it all. Regarded by everyone in Belize as the most beautiful part of the country, it has scenic countryside with mountains and clear rivers; lush jungle; incredible flora and fauna (there are more than 500 species of birds in Belize) and perhaps more important, a very mixed-up populace who are warm and friendly and without any racial discrimination.

Mayan Ruins

In Cayo there is an abundance of the country’s most accessible Maya sites such as Chechem Ha, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, El Pilar; as well as Caracol, in its heyday a larger city-state than Guatemala’s

famous Tikal, which itself is only a short distance away. Hiking trails can be found in wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and archaeological sites throughout the area and Cayo is famous for its caves, such as Actun Tunichil Muknal, many of which have Maya archaeological importance. And, with canoeing, horseback riding, etc., it is no wonder that Cayo is the main inland tourist destination, as well as being the first choice for foreigners wishing to re-locate to Belize.

Belmopan is only one hour from the Caribbean Sea and from San Ignacio it is only a short drive to the Guatemalan border and access to all of Central America. Incidentally, there have been no civil wars in Guatemala or the other countries for many years now and it is ok to travel through Central America as you please.

Re/max Cayo Specialist John Acott

John Acott

My name is John Acott and I am a 65-year old Englishman (and Belizean) living in Santa Elena, Cayo; separated only by the beautiful Macal River from the twin town of San Ignacio. I have been living here for more than 24 years and have no plans to ever leave this wonderful country.

I first came to Belize with the Royal Air Force, in which I served for 25 years. Soon after that, I resigned from the RAF and came to live in Belize, a decision I have never regretted.

I am a long-term member of the Rotary Club of San Ignacio; past chairman of the Twin-Towns Crime Committee; member of the People's Coalition of Cayo; and a former director of the local Adventist Hospital. I am a Director of the Board for the Association of Real Estate Brokers of Belize (AREBB).

I am well-respected locally and having lived in these towns for such a long time, I know most of the locals (or they know me) and, if I don't know the answer to your questions, I'm sure to know somebody who does.
